CNN —Six former Mississippi law enforcement officers pleaded guilty Monday to all state charges against them stemming from the torture and abuse of two Black men earlier this year. Additionally, Dedmon was charged with home invasion and Elward was charged with home invasion and aggravated assault, the release says. McAlpin, Middleton, Opdyke and Hartfield each faced an additional charge of first-degree obstruction of justice. The Richland Police Department announced in July that Hartfield – who was off-duty at the time of the alleged assault – had resigned. An attorney for Opdyke said the former officer “has admitted to his wrongdoing” and will plead guilty to all charges against him in Rankin County Circuit Court on August 14.

Dedmon, Opdyke and Elward broke open the carport door and Hartfield kicked open the back door. Entering the home without a warrant, the officers encountered two Black men: Eddie Parker and Michael Jenkins. The abuse continued in a bedroom, where Opdyke, Middleton, Dedmon and McAlpin assaulted Parker with pieces of wood and a metal sword. Dedmon, Middleton, Hartfield and Elward then began to tase the two men repeatedly to see “which (Taser) was the most powerful,” the document said. Attorneys for Middleton, Elward and Hartfield declined to comment on the case.

WASHINGTON, June 30 (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday turned away a dispute involving a transgender woman whose former jailers housed her with men and delayed her hormone treatment in a case that asked whether gender dysphoria is a disability under federal law. At issue was whether gender dysphoria, a condition involving distress resulting from a discrepancy between a person's gender identity and their assigned sex at birth, qualifies as a disability under a landmark 1990 federal law called the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The jail classified Williams as male because she "maintains the male genitalia with which she was born," according to 2021 court records. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the judge's ruling, finding that gender dysphoria is protected under the ADA. A school bus driver in D.C. was charged with driving while intoxicated after police said he crashed into a ditch, injuring nine children returning from a field trip. The bus — carrying 44 children and four adults — hit a rock, causing the rim to bend and the tire to flatten. "Reynolds continued driving until the adults on the bus convinced him to follow a second bus, which was also returning to the school from the field trip," police said. The agency's Motor Carrier Safety also found 18 safety violations between Reynolds and the other bus driver transporting children on the trip. "MCS determined that none of the bus drivers were properly licensed to operate a school bus," authorities said.
